On March 13, 2025, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), along with officers from the Gelephu Police Station, held an interactive session with 72 individuals identified as substance abusers (comprising 65 males and 7 females) to deliberate on the detrimental effects associated with drug abuse.

The session commenced with the presentation of a brief video excerpt from His Majesty’s 115th National Day Speech, which established a serious and motivational atmosphere for the ensuing dialogue.

Throughout the interaction, the SSP highlighted peer pressure as a predominant factor contributing to drug use, referencing findings from the Intelligent Led Policing (ILP). He elaborated on the grave legal and social repercussions of substance abuse, encouraging participants to reconsider their choices and adopt a more health-conscious and purposeful lifestyle.

A critical takeaway from the discussion was the imperative of diminishing the demand for drugs. The SSP articulated that should individuals cease drug consumption, the supply would inherently diminish. He further underscored the importance of being fully present and engaged in daily activities as a fundamental aspect of leading a meaningful and productive life.

Police Initiatives and Future Directions

The Gelephu Police delineated a series of stringent measures aimed at effectively combating drug abuse and trafficking:

  • Random Mandatory Drug Testing
  • Intensive Surprise Checks on Highways
  • Blacklisting Offenders – Individuals apprehended for drug abuse will face restrictions on travel to Dadgari through the CPMS and BMS.
  • Disqualification from Opportunities
  • Implementation of a Zero-Tolerance Policy

Refreshments were provided after the session, creating a platform for informal discussions between the officers and attendees. During this interval, numerous participants voluntarily disclosed information regarding drug suppliers and expressed their readiness to assist law enforcement agencies in the fight against drug abuse.

The session was a pivotal moment for several attendees. In conclusion, the SSP reaffirmed the police department’s steadfast commitment to achieving a drug-free environment in Gelephu.
