The Police Training Institute (PTI) at Jigmeling, Gelephu, stands as a crucial establishment under the Royal Bhutan Police (RBP), committed to the training and professional development of police personnel. The RBP was officially established on 1 September 1965, under the leadership of His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, with an initial force of 555 personnel reassigned from the Royal Bhutan Army. Since its inception, the RBP has highlighted the significance of structured training programmes to enhance the skills and professionalism of its officers.
In alignment with this vision, the PTI at Jigmeling was established to provide high-standard training for police personnel. The institute’s primary objectives include conducting basic training for officer probationers and recruits, shaping them into professional police officers, and instilling values of integrity, professional knowledge, moral courage, physical fitness, and mental resilience. Additionally, the PTI offers promotion and refresher courses, workshops, seminars, and specialised training in the Formed Police Unit (FPU), Desuung Accelerated Training, among others.
A significant milestone in the institute’s history was the visit of His Majesty the King during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the RBP in 2015. His Majesty’s presence at the PTI in Jigmeling and the Royal Address during the Passing Out Parade of the 47th Batch of Gagsars on 15 March 2015, represented a moment of great pride and honour for the institute and its trainees.
Over the years, the PTI at Jigmeling has evolved into a comprehensive training facility, aiming to transform into a National Integrated Training Academy capable of providing training to other agencies. This will significantly contribute to enhancing law enforcement standards in Bhutan.
