DLGDM Hands Over Swift Water Rescue Equipment to RBP.

The Department of Local Governance and Disaster Management (DLGDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, successfully conducted an official handing-taking ceremony of swift water rescue equipment to the Royal Bhutan Police today at the DLGDM Conference Hall. The ceremony underscores Bhutan’s continued commitment to strengthening disaster resilience under His Majesty’s visionary leadership.

The ceremony was graced by His Excellency, the Home Minister, as the Chief Guest, accompanied by the Honorable Home Secretary and the Honorable Chief of Police as the Guest of Honor. The event was also attended by senior officials from the DLGDM and key representatives from the Royal Bhutan Police, including the Fire and Rescue Services Division, the National Search and Rescue Training Centre (NSARTC), and the Police Training Institute, Jigmeling. The distinguished attendance underscored a unified and collaborative commitment to enhancing national safety and disaster preparedness.

A total of six sets of advanced kayaks and rescue accessories, procured at a cost of Nu. 2 millions with support from the European Union, were formally handed over to enhance Bhutan’s preparedness for water-related emergencies. The equipment was distributed as follows:

• Fire and Rescue Services Division (FRSD), Thimphu – 2 sets

• National Search and Rescue Training Centre (NSARTC), Tashigatshel – 2 sets

• Police Training Institute (PTI), Jigmeling – 2 sets

The initiative was highlighted as a direct implementation of the Disaster Management Act of Bhutan 2013, which aligns with the national vision for a resilient and secure Bhutan. The deployment of modern rescue equipment is seen as critical for saving lives during climate-induced disasters, such as flash floods and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), that threaten communities across the country.
